Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto (1939) makes an odd discmate for the Tchaikovsky, and seems like an equally odd choice for Dalene at this stage of his career. Considering the lush, hyper-Romantic lyricism of Barber’s first two movements, his concerto strikes one as the antithesis of the Tchaikovsky, in that it’s anything but a dazzling, knock-‘em-dead display piece.
