The genus name Nauplius was published posthumously by Otto Friedrich Müller in 1785 for animals now known to be the larvae of copepods. The nauplius stage (plural: nauplii) is characterised by the use of the appendages of the head (the antennae) for swimming. The nauplius is also the stage at which a simple, unpaired eye first appears.
There are two main kinds of marine barnacles: goose barnacles (with stalk) and acorn barnacles (without stalk). Their legs develop into feathery cirri for filtering water. Their larvae (nauplius, cipris) can swim freely in water. The carapace of Cirripedia projects backward from the head, consisting of several calcareous plates enclosing the
Earliest and most basic type of a crustacean larva is the nauplius.; Development in the 1st naupliar stage is minimal, with only 3 pairs of appendages present – the 1st antennae, the second antennae and the mandibles.; During successive moults, trunk segments and additional appendages are usually added.; There is no segmentation of the body and a single eye (naupliar eye) in the Most of the 800 species of barnacles are very small. Barnacles start life as a free swimming larvae called a nauplius. The nauplius has an single-shelled exoskeleton, antennae, and six jointed legs. As it grows it molts and sheds its exoskeleton until it becomes a cyprid. The cyprid does not feed. It attaches itself to a rock or other solid surface using special cement glands in its antennae.

In barnacle …emerge as free-swimming forms called nauplii, as in many other crustacean species. In typical barnacles six naupliar stages precede formation of a cypris—a nonfeeding larval stage (see video). The cypris has a bivalved shell of chitin (a hard protein substance), cement glands on the antennules (first antennae), and a series…

Encyclopaedia Britannica (11th ed., vol. 7) (New York, NY: The Encyclopaedia Britannica Company, 1910) parasitic barnacles, order Rhizocephala; a brief general review of this group is provided at the end of the chapter. Development and Morphology The pelagic phase of the barnacle life cycle consists of two larval forms. The first form, the nauplius, undergoes a series of molts producing four to six planktotrophic or lecithotrophic naupliar Brooding varies among barnacle species and can be up to several months duration. But we know that small barnacles are visible upon whales within days or weeks of their arrival in the lagoons. Thus the conclusion is that these whale barnacles have a brief egg brooding period. The eggs develop into a form called nauplius or nauplius larvae.

The fertilized eggs of barnacles (e.g., Balanus balanoides and Elminius modestus) are maintained within the adult mantle cavity until a hatching factor elicits Life cycle. Barnacles have two larval stages.
