CTCSS frequencies and squelch codes may differ in some radios from third-party manufacturers. For the best results, you should compare CTCSS frequency information from your third-party radio with the information in this table. Channel Number Frequency (MHz) 0 199.5 1 67.0 2 71.9
This means less chance that a nearby station will accidentally overlap with yours. Specifically, DCS gives you 83 codes, whereas CTCSS gives you somewhere between 26-50 squelch tones depending on the radio -- manufacturers have added extra codes over time. 2019-09-02 2015-11-15 2012-12-17 2019-02-25 5 PLT-PLR Transmit and receive different CTCSS tones 6 PL-DCS Transmit CTCSS - Receive DCS 7 DCS-PL Transmit DCS - Receive CTCSS 8 DCS-CSQ Transmit DCS - Receive CSQ 9 CSQ-DCS Transmit CSQ - Receive DCS 10 DCS-NN Transmit and receive the same DCS code with normal polarity 11 DCS-NR Transmit and receive the same DCS code with different tx/rx CTCSS Encoding - General Use on GMRS - posted in General Discussion: From time to time I see radios advertised with words to the effect: Programmed with the standard or common CTCSS coding. When I got my hand held TR-505s they had their own default coding programmed into the 16 channels.

DCS (Digital-Coded Squelch) uses a 23-bit digital pattern to activate coded receivers. DCS or, as they called it, DPL, was developed by Motorola back in the 1970s, Originally, there were 777 codes plus 777 inverted codes. However, that just did not "work out" and there were a lot of false signals which would "open" the squelch even though the correct code was not sent. CTCSS codes are functions that reject undesired signals on your channel. You will hear a call only CTCSS (Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System) uses sub-audible (below 300 Hz, not necessarily inaudible) tones to activate coded receivers.
Names such as QT, DQT, PL, PL-tone, PL-code, Privacy code or tone, or CTCSS/DCS, all CTCSS frequencies and squelch codes may differ in some radios from third-party manufacturers. For the best results, you should compare CTCSS frequency Privacy Codes. 219 codes (CTCSS 38, DCS 181).

No code means you will hear everything on that channel, with a code you will only hear traffic with a matching code. Not all repeaters use CTCSS, The WRAK968 repeaters are set up with DCS codes instead. To my knowledge it is user preference as to which code group they wish to use with no real advantage to ether side.
2018-07-20 2019-09-02 DCS (aka DSQ/DPL) provides a slightly larger range of codes to pick from compared to CTCSS. This means less chance that a nearby station will accidentally overlap with yours. Specifically, DCS gives you 83 codes, whereas CTCSS gives you somewhere between 26-50 squelch tones depending on the radio -- manufacturers have added extra codes over time. They are not actually security codes. But generally those codes are set to ‘0’, or ‘no code’. or ‘no tone’.

CTCSS takes advantage of the unused bandwidth below 300Hz by mixing one of the many tones listed below into the audio. If the radio receiver chooses to, it can keep the radio squelch circuit silent unless a particular tone is found.
Often called a continuous tone-coded squelch system (CTCSS) or digital-coded squelch (DCS) encoding Walkie talkie privacy codes (CTCSS) and other formats like DCS are designed to keep your communications secure and only accessible to those you intend to hear them. If you are in an area busy with other people using walkie-talkies, such as a ski resort, it can be difficult to find a clear channel to use for you and your friends.

part two: find the ctcss codes, privacy codes, pl codes, or subchannels for your frs/gmrs radio Step One: Understand what frequencies are matched to your Channel Numbers in your FRS/GMRS radios Here is the page from my Motorola Talkabout FRS/GMRS radio instruction manual to show what frequencies the channels are on.
* Alarm function. * Up to 128 for other tasks. A total of 3124 channel combinations are available when the 22 channels are combined with the 142 privacy codes (38 CTCSS/104 DCS).
