OVERVIEW: The AIARE Level 1 avalanche course is an introduction to avalanche hazard management. It is the first in a series of three courses by the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE), including the Avalanche level 1, Companion Rescue, and Avalanche level 2.

The AIARE 2 builds on the introductory avalanche hazard management model introduced in the AIARE 1 and adds to it the evaluation of critical hazard assessment factors. Students will describe and discuss weather, snowpack and avalanche processes, and identify how these processes relate to observations and travel within avalanche terrain. The AIARE 2 takes off where the AIARE 1 ends, adding to your avalanche hazard management toolbox with the introduction of critical hazard assessment factors.
