Here, we proposed the topological insulator laser: a photonic topological insulator that lases. The design of such a laser system is highly non-standard - a laser is an open, non-Hermitian (due to gain/loss) and nonlinear (due to saturation) system. The topological insulator laser alters current understanding of the interplay between disorder and lasing, and at the same time opens exciting possibilities in topological physics, such as We demonstrate a nonmagnetic topological insulator laser exhibiting topologically-protected transport.
