Composing his first music at the age of five, he entered St. Petersburg Conservatory at the age of thirteen and made his first public appearance four years later. Even as a student, Prokofiev was aware of Stravinsky’s rapid rise to fame through his association with Sergei Diaghilev. On graduating in 1914, Prokofiev travelled to London to meet Diaghilev for himself and encounter the Ballets Russes.
