The greater bilby is currently found in the Great Sandy desert, Gibson desert and the Tanami desert in central Australia, parts of the Pilbara and Kimberly in Western Australia and parts of southwest Queensland such as the Astrebla Downs national park, Diamantina national park and they have been reintroduced to the Currawinya national park.

The term bilby is a loanword from the Yuwaalaraay Aboriginal language of northern New South Wales, meaning long-nosed rat. It is known as dalgite in Western Australia, and the nickname pinkie is sometimes used in South Australia. The Wiradjuri of New South Wales also call it "bilby".

Sadly, the Lesser bilby hasn’t been seen alive for many decades and is thought to be extinct. The Greater Bilby, sometimes depicted as Australia's Easter Bunny, belongs to a group of ground-dwelling marsupials known as bandicoots. There were originally two species of Bilby- The Greater and the Lesser Bilby, Macrotis leucura, but the Lesser Bilby is thought to have become extinct in the 1950s. The bilby is a long-eared bandicoot with powerful claws.

The Greater Bilby, usually referred to as the Bilby, is the largest of the bandicoots, measuring up to 55cm in length (body only) with a tail up to 29cm long. Greater bilbies are known for their large, relatively hairless, rabbit-like ears, and long pointed snouts with sensory vibrissae and a hairless pink nose. Their fur is soft, silky and bluish grey in color with a mix of fawn over the majority of the body. The belly is covered in white or cream fur. The greater bilby is a marsupial and is the largest of the bandicoots reaching the size of a rabbit. Males vary in length between 30 centimetres and 55 centimetres and weigh between 1 and 2.5 kilograms.
