A great contemporary German philosopher attacks the explosive problem of political myth in our day, and reveals how the myth of the state evolved from primitive times to prepare the way for the rise of the modern totalitarian state."A brilliant survey of some of the major texts in the history of political theory."—Kenneth Burke, The Nation. It suggests that while Cassirer had contributed to the epochal discovery of myth as a “new force” in political reality, he failed to realize the full meanings and implications of this discovery: myth is crucial to the constitution of modern political communities. While Ernst Cassirer provides an illuminating analysis of the nature of myth in The Myth of the State, he never tells his reader what the western myth of the state is. The Myth of the State. Cassirer's last work, The Myth of the State (1946), was published posthumously; at one level it is an attempt to understand the intellectual origins of Nazi Germany. Cassirer sees Nazi Germany as a society in which the dangerous power of myth is not checked or subdued by superior forces.
